During the Biblical time of Jesus, a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee, to which Jesus and Mother Mary were invited. Mother Mary was very pleased that her Son was there along with a handful of his first disciples. In the wedding, she found that there was a greater demand upon the provisions and the supply was running short. Mother Mary, who is full of love, kindness and empathy; with an anxiety that was natural to such a mother of gentle spirit, told her Son that "there was no more wine." (John 2:3) But our Lord Jesus replied, "My hour is not yet come." (John 2:4). Even then, Mother Mary stood strong in her faith that Jesus has the power to provide the need.
Mother Mary knew Jesus Christ's gentleness and His infinite love. So she very wisely and kindly said to the servants, “Do whatever He tells you.”(John 2:5). This holy woman had a good deal of power which made a great impression upon the servants, for they did exactly what she told them. It was at this moment where Jesus performed a great miracle. There were six stone water jars, each of which could hold more than ten gallons (40 L). Jesus instructed the attendants, “Fill the jars with water. Now draw some out and take it to the director of the feast.” ( John 2:7,8) And the water miraculously transformed into wine. It turned out to be the tastiest among the ones that were served before! (John 4:10)
Transforming water into wine at a wedding feast in Cana was the first miracle of Jesus in His public life. The miracle centers on 'wine' because abundant wine is symbolic of God's presence in the world in the eschatological age (Amos 9:13; Joel 3:18)
The very presence of Jesus and Mary brought blessings to the couple who were married that day.
